The Scripture Readings for June 23, 2013 are:
1 Kings 19:1–15
Elijah the prophet flees from King Ahab and Jezebel who want to kill him because he triumphed in a contest with the prophets. God gives Elijah food and water while he is in the desert. When Elijah tells God that he is depressed because he is the only prophet left and the Israelites are unfaithful to God, God tells him to stand on the mountain where God will pass by (God is the still small voice). God then gives Elijah a new mission.
Psalm 42 p. 768
The psalmist sings of longing for God.
Galatians 3:23–29
Paul gives the people of the church in Galatia a comparison of life before faith and life after being justified (brought into right relationship with God) by faith.
Luke 8:26–39
Jesus drives a demon out of a man with an unclean spirit. The demons enter a nearby herd of pigs. When the villagers see the man restored to good mental health, they are afraid of Jesus. Jesus tells the man to 'declare how much God has done for you' when the man says he wants to follow Jesus.
